A Workshop on Grape Plant Improvement June 5, 2008, 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM NW Viticulture Center The first line of defense against pests, disease and virus in any vineyard is prevention through use of clean plant materials. "GRAPEVINE LEAFROLL DISEASE – AN INCREASING PROBLEM FOR CALIFORNIA VINEYARDS"
FREEBORN HALL June 10, 2008 New research suggest that leafroll disease has become a far more serious problem in California vineyards than previously recognized. The disease was assumed to be largely graft-transmitted under California conditions. Unfortunately, this situation seems to have changed. In the face of what may be a epidemic wave of leafroll spread, we are have brought together experts from around the world with leading research programs on leafroll disease and on its vectors, mealybugs and soft scale. From Italy, Dr. Giovanni Martelli, Professor, Istituto di Patologia Vegetale, Università di Sassari
Dipartimento di Protezione delle Piante, Università di Bari, will be providing an overview of the state of knowledge of the leafroll viruses based on his many years of leadership of the grape virology community. Dr. Deborah Golino, Cooperative Extension Specialist, Department of Plant Pathology, UC Davis, will discuss her observation of leafroll effects and field spread over the last 15 years. Dr. Adib Rowhani, Project Scientist/Plant Pathologist, Foundation Plant Services, UC Davis, will discuss tests for detecting the leafroll and vitiviruses. Dr. Dr. Kent M. Daane, Cooperative Extension Specialist, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management, UC Berkeley, will lecture on the biology and control of mealybug in California. The transmission biology of leafroll disease and its mealybug vector will be explained by Dr. Rodrigo Almeida, Assistant Professor, Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management, UC Berkeley. We will be joined as well by two entomologists from New Zealand where leafroll spread is a serious and common problem, Drs. J.T.S. Walker and Vaugn Bell, Hawke’s Bay Research Centre, HortResearch. The day will conclude with a lecture by Dr. Marc Fuchs, Department of Plant Pathology, Cornell University, New York, on conventional and molecular strategies for leafroll control.
