Opportunity: Scholarship work experience and travel
Location: New Zealand
The Doug Wisor Memorial Scholarship 2009 - Doug Wisor was a brilliant young American born winemaker at Craggy Range Winery who passed away in New Zealand following a tragic kite surfing accident. During his time with Craggy Range, Doug made some of the finest wines New Zealand has seen.
The Scholarship, administered by the American Australian Association, supports a young American winemaker to travel to New Zealand to intern at Craggy Range Winery for a vintage. The Doug Wisor Memorial Fund will provide return airfares from the US , whilst Craggy Range will provide accommodation and a modest salary for the duration of the vintage, which runs from approximately March until May 2010. The recipient will also be given the opportunity to tour New Zealand ’s diverse wine regions at the completion of their internship.
Justin Carr, 2008 scholarship recipient, has shared her experiences of working a vintage at Craggy Range Winery:
“For the budding winemaker visiting New Zealand , there may be no better place to continue to develop their skills than Craggy Range .”
“Vineyard work included sampling in several vineyard sites in the Hawkes Bay as well as the Te Muna Vineyard in Martinborough. In the lab, I completed routine analysis on collected samples for Brix, pH, TA, SO2 (Aspiration), VA (Cash), RS (Clini, Rebelein), Malic/Lactic (Chromatography, Enzymatic), cell counts, turbidity, fining trials as well as daily fermentation monitoring. Cellar work included receiving fruit and weighing, sorting, crusher/press operations, racking, filtration, juice & wine transfer, inoculations & additions, cap management (punchdowns, pumpovers, delastage), draining & pressing tanks, prepping & filling barrels, sanitizing, forklift operations and general winery maintenance.”

Two weeks touring many of the other great wineries of New Zealand is a truly unique opportunity to meet many gifted winemakers and vineyard managers, taste their wines and see the regional diversity of climate, soil and resulting fruit.”

Selection Criteria:
· Applicant should demonstrate intellect, vision, innovation and practical experience in winemaking.
· Demonstrate why an overseas internship would be important in career development.
· Explanation of mutual benefits likely to both the applicant and vineyard.
· Applications must be clear, concise and easily understandable.
· Please include contact details for at least one recent wine industry referee.
